ALL ASSAM INTER COLLEGE DEBATING COMEPETITION HELD AT SONAPUR COLLEGE

An All Assam Inter College Debating Competition was held on 21st January, 2014 at Sonapur College. The topic of the debate was “In the opinion of the house -The Proposed Upper House is Not a Quality Addition to the Political System of Assam”. The prize money and trophy of the event was sponsored by Sinam Iboton Singh, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Mathematics, Sonapur College in the memory of his father Late Sinam Uriba Singh. Mr.Dipjyoti Deka, Associate Professor in English and Convener of the program welcomed the gathering and the program formally began with the lighting of the lamp by Sinam Kunjabati Devi, wife of Late Sinam Uriba Singh. Dr. Devabrot Khanikor, Principal, Sonapur College addressed the gathering with his inaugural speech. In his speech, the Principal encouraged the students to participate in various events for their all-round development and opined that this maiden venture would hopefully go a long way in forming a tradition of its own. Mr. Sinam Iboton Singh addressed the gathering on behalf of his family and thanked the college authority for providing the platform to his family to sponsor the prizes to pay tribute to their father in a befitting manner. Students from various colleges of the state participated and vied for the honours. At the end of a daylong heated and interesting debate Sonapur College bagged the Best Team title and Chhaygaon College emerged as the second best. In the individual category Mridul Barman from Assam Education and Management Academy was adjudged the Best Debater, while Samujwal Dutta of DKD College, Dergaon and Dulumoni Kalita of Chhaygaon College were awarded the second and third Best Debater awards respectively. The individual winners were given a cash prize of Rs 10,000, Rs 7,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively. Dr. Sunil Paban Barua, renowned educationist and former Professor of B. Borooah College graced the occasion as the Speaker. The panel of judges comprised of Mrs. Aparna Devi, Faculty member, Asom Jatiya Bidyalaya, Guwahati, Mr. Satyen Sarma, Senior Advocate, Gauhati High Court and Mr. Kajal Saikia, Chief Manager, Human Resource, Numaligarh Refinery, Golaghat. The honourable judges shared their views and offered their valuable comments to the student community in general and to the debaters in particular. At the end of the event, the prizes and the certificates of participation were handed to the debaters. The program was officially concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Biman Patowary.
